Worth The Discussion On TV? Let's talk sex tv shows..

“Don’t do it until you’re married” is the popular advice every parent or parent figure (Adult) would give to their offspring when the topic of sex is mentioned.

“And we are reminded to make sure the kids are asleep as this content is not suitable for their consumption” the likely words of the host of any sex talk show. Are the kids really asleep? Are the parents ensuring that the kids are unable to consume such content? Are the hosts of the show sure the parents are complying? Well, rhetorical questions. From Talk sex with Sue Johanson with Brian stover, Sue Johanson and Sadie Allison on the live show where viewers could call in and ask questions about sex as far back as the year two thousand and two (2002) in the United States to the days of Duvet (GhOne TV), Odo Nkomopa (Angel TV), Odo Ahomaso (Adam Tv) etc. down here in Ghana, it’s evident that for the past twenty years or more people get bolder by the day to be vocal about sex related matters on public platforms such as Television and radio.

What is a Sex Talk Show?

A host and a few speakers round a table who share ideas and experiences on sex as a topic, the dynamics, the dos and don’ts and every other thing that relates to sex as a topic. A sex talk show will lack content if the speakers on the show have not had sex for quite a long time, this means you should have had sex for quite a long while to be able to educate and share your experiences of sex to the public. So probably a person who’s had just a one night stand cannot be very vocal on a sex talk show, unless that’s the topic for discussion. In conducting these sex talk shows, a series of speakers are carefully selected. Probably a doctor or a psychologist to touch on the health aspects, a sexually active individual who wishes to share his experience or educate the audience and in some rare cases a pastor to elaborate on the spiritual aspects of sex. This is from the observation of the sex talk shows being aired on the Ghanaian media landscape. These shows are heavily identified to be rated 18 years and above. It is inappropriate to find a fifteen year old child watching or listening to a sex talk show as the talks are sometimes accompanied by visual content such as pornographic videos. During the course of the show, the hosts make it habitual to remind the audience to ensure that the young ones are asleep as the shows are mostly aired at night.

The shows are structured in such a way that it should be viewed by a sexually active couple be it married or unmarried to be able to make good use of the education that is being delivered through the television or radio or online medium.

Are sex shows relevant?

Many a time, these shows allow for people to call in and share their experiences and ask questions concerning the topic for discussion. As to whether the sex shows are relevant or not, it depends on you the viewer. Has it taught you something you didn’t know and was never going to find out? Has it enhanced your sex life with your partner? Has it made you appreciate sex more as an art than an act? If your answer is yes then probably the sex talk shows are relevant to you. If your answer is no, then it’s possible you’ve not benefited from the programme, it’s not relevant to you.

Let’s answer the rhetorical questions!

⁃ Are the Kids really asleep?

Most of the sex talk shows are not hosted as an event where the hosts are able to visibly notice their audience to ensure it’s an all adult audience. They are hosted in studios and aired via the media so they obviously cannot tell who is watching or not watching but can just assume or hope that it’s a majority of adults that consume the show. If you were expecting a yes or no to this question then you’ll have to forgive but none can tell if the kids are really asleep. It’s just a hopeful assumption.

⁃ Are the parents ensuring that the kids are unable to consume such content?

That is quite an easy task to accomplish especially for parents who do not share the same  bedroom with their children. The kids could be instructed to get to bed to afford the parents some privacy to enjoy their favorite sex talk show. So it’s a seventy over hundred here that the parents can ensure that the kids do not consume such inappropriate content but as to whether they are doing it still remains rhetorical. Hope I’m forgiven again.

⁃ Are the hosts of the show sure the parents are complying?

As mentioned in the initial answer, the hosts or producers of the shows cannot tell what is happening in the homes of their audiences and so obviously cannot tell if the parents are complying with the instructions not to let children below that Mmmm age of 18  watch the programme. They are just hopeful that the parents will look out for the best interest of their children and make them stay away from such content. I’m sorry but all three questions are still rhetorical!

In recent times there have been quite some extreme events during these talk shows that allows people act or try to act the act of sex with the introduction of sex positions. People are seen on Television fondling and literally romancing on live Television. To those instances people hold different opinions but in all circumstances sex talk shows have come to stay and may never leave our screens as more and more shows keep popping by the day.
